ARTIST STATEMENT

As an artist, I walk around Southampton and London collecting abandoned objects, choosing whatever peaks my interest and compels me to collect it.  These are usually aged objects which had a life before and their full potential was in a different era. To borrow the anthropologist Arjuh Appadurai’s term “the social life of things”, my search for object revive already dead objects. I take them to my white cube studio space and play with them, rearrange them. Sometimes these interventions are small and seemingly insignificant; sometimes they are complex rearrangements. The more subtle alterations may or may not be noticed but my hope is that people may have an encounter with the sculpture, catching a glimpse of something strange.

The juxtaposition of objects and the tension that can be created, both visually and physically, by the careful placing of found objects in relatively precarious positions, that features heavily in my work.  The reuse of found objects, together with the placement of them into oddly jarring postures moves them away from their original intention. For me, creating these shapes is like drawing with sculpture
